In the fog-shrouded town of Mirefall Reach, something ancient has awoken.

What was once a quiet coastal settlement has become a place of whispers, missing persons, and impossible geometries. The locals speak of shadows that move against the wind, of dreams that bleed into waking hours, and of doors that should not be. You are an investigator—one of the few who still dares to seek the truth—drawn here by cryptic letters, half-forgotten folklore, or the sudden silence of a loved one. Armed with little more than a notebook, a revolver, and dwindling sanity, you must uncover the source of the corruption before the town is swallowed entirely by forces older than humanity itself.

Your task is grim but clear: locate the cursed sites where the veil between worlds has grown thin and “close” them. Each location—whether it be the derelict school, the overgrown cemetery, the abandoned mill, or the church whose steeple now points at an angle that defies reason. By confronting the horrors that dwell within and performing the necessary rites (or simply surviving long enough to seal the breach), you can weaken the growing influence of the Great Old Ones. But every step deeper into the town’s secrets comes at a cost. Sanity frays, allies vanish, and the very fabric of reality begins to tear. Your final destination is ‘The Pit’ from which The Thing That Should Not Be will awaken.

In this game, you are not a hero of legend. You are a desperate soul fighting against the inevitable. The dice you roll are your fragile tools and fleeting moments of clarity in a world sliding into cosmic madness. Will you seal enough locations and close The Pit to delay the awakening… or will you, like so many before you, become another footnote in the Necronomicon?

The Thing That Should Not Be is a solo card dice-placement game in which you play an investigator investigating the town of Mirefall Reach. You need to get to ‘The Pit’ and close it before you are overwhelmed and unimaginable horrors are unleashed.

This sounds really intriguing… I haven’t tried it yet, but from the description and the presentation, it could well pull me in!


While I agree with the Juten’s comment, I would just like to add that the art being AI generated doesn’t bother me. The art is part of a much larger whole, and not the end product, and not everyone has all of skills to create something like this as a one-person outfit. Given that it is free, unless the AI art is such a detriment to the overall product (which it certainly does not seem to be!), then people can choose to play or not, and pay or not, accordingly.

This looks really good - my mind is already going off in how to expand this as this is something very similar to what I'm personally working on.  Good job!

One thing you may want to clarify is the use of AI art. I personally don't give a damn, specially not on a prototype, but the anti AI crowd are super quick to jump on anyone using it without declaring it so maybe shield yourself from the angry mob, man.
